The GINGER Project

Our body is our canvas. Physical self-expression centers around showing who you are through hairstyles, clothes and fashion, piercings or tattoos, make-up and accessories. Particularly for adolescents and young adults, self-expression through their appearance can be a low-cost and low-risk way to aid their identity development. Trying our different looks, trends, or aspects of the self can be a way of communicating their identity to themselves and others.

The GINGER project, short for Gender and Identity Exploration Research, explores how aspects of physical self-expression relate to identity development and struggles. Through online self-report questionnaires, our team has started to map out how these concepts interact in young adults.
